I AM A REGISTERED MEMBER OF THE OFFICIAL WEBSITE OF THE REPUBLIC OF THE PHILIPPINES' FORUM OR MESSAGE BOARD. Here's the link,

http://forum.gov.ph/thread.asp?rootID=87372&catID=6

So you may read what our "Kapwa Pinoys" have been talking about unschooling and homeschooling. Topics that maybe remote to some of us, yet, it has become the trends of our modern times when the global recession has affected even the educational system and quality, not to mention the distrust of every Filipino in the kind of government leaders that we have. We as Biblical Christians pray for them though as what the Bible instructs us to do in spite of the quality of leaders that we have. And yet, this kind of government sets so much restrictions on how all schools both traditional (resident classroom instruction) and non-traditional (church / home -schoolings, distance learning like ours here in this blog, computer interactive technology, correspondence, video/audio tapes, etc.) should secure licenses and accreditation.

Come to think that the ones responsible in educating the youths of today are their parents. For much of history and in many cultures, enlisting professional teachers (whether as tutors or in a formal academic setting) was an option available only to a small elite. Thus, until relatively recently, the vast majority of people were educated by parents (especially during early childhood) and in the context of a specific type labor that they would pursue in adult life, such as working in the fields or learning a trade. In the early, ancient times, education was a business between the first schoolmasters (Biblical name for missionary educators) and the parents of the young people. Even DepEd's History of Philippine Education

(access their llink: http://www.deped.gov.ph/about_deped/history.asp)

mentions this, "Chaplains and non-commissioned officers were assigned to teach using English as the medium of instruction." DepEd and our government should know at least that early education in our country during the Spanish and American colonizations, were done by the Catholic and Protestant and Baptist educators.

May I post one comment that I read from this message board that i feel so true: "I'm a concerned Dad. I have a son who will be starting Grade 1 next year, another who will be in kindergarten and another who will be in the 4th grade. With the high cost of the ever increasing tuitions in our POOR country and the increase in school drop outs, this would be a very important topic and alternative that Pres. GMA should address. Homeschooling, I feel should be looked into and adopted to law. Everybody is always saying something negative about the Education System in the Philippines. Sad to say, they are all true. My wife and I have been EDUCATING our kids with our knowledge and care.

They have learned a lot including proper use of the English and Filipino language among others. We feel that they are learning more useful and relevant information from us properly and correctly. Unfortunately outside influences has been destroying what we have been teaching. From Television, to teachers and schools, and from other kids. These influences have a negative impact on our kids. We as parents want whats best for our children and the best starts at home. I know that there is also concern about social skills. That's why there should also be a support system either online or in a community where parents who are homeschooling their kids should get together to socialize and or go on educational field trips.

I wish there was a place where my kids can go to school with other kids who are being EDUCATED by their parents. Parents who know and care. I also wish that the Government would get off their asses and make this a reality where the parents have the right to give their kids the best education with little cost and political cr~p that is happening in schools and the government. If the Government and Pres. GMA is serious about improving EDUCATION in our country, this would be a good start."

WHAT EVERY FILIPINO SHOULD KNOW ABOUT HOMESCHOOLING AND UNSCHOOLING, THEY HAVE NOW BECOME A TREND OF TODAY.... Empty WHAT IS HOMESCHOOLING?

Post  Admin Sat May 02, 2009 2:47 am

Homeschooling or homeschool (also called home education or home learning) and Church-Schooling or Bible Schooling are the education of children at home or church, typically by parents or pastors and Christian workers (with membership professional academicians) but sometimes by tutors, rather than in a formal setting of public or private school. Although prior to the introduction of compulsory school attendance laws, most childhood education occurred within the family or community, homeschooling in the modern sense is an alternative in developed countries to formal education. In the Bible, the school masters are the Christian parents and elders fo the church. Romans 2:20 - "Weymouth New Testament" ... "a schoolmaster for the dull and ignorant, a teacher of the young, because in the Law you possess an outline of real knowledge and an outline of the truth." Let us turn to the Epistle to the Galatians chapter 3 and the text is found at verse 24. "Wherefore the law was our schoolmaster to bring us unto Christ, that we might be justified by faith" (Galatians 3,24). "The law was our schoolmaster to bring us unto Christ, that we might be justified by faith" (text).

Easton's Bible Dictionary
The law so designated by Paul (Galatians 3:24, 25). As so used, the word does not mean teacher, but pedagogue (shortened into the modern page), i.e., one who was intrusted with the supervision of a family, taking them to and from the school, being responsible for their safety and manners. Hence the pedagogue was stern and severe in his discipline. Thus the law was a pedagogue to the Jews, with a view to Christ, i.e., to prepare for faith in Christ by producing convictions of guilt and helplessness. The office of the pedagogue ceased when "faith came", i.e., the object of that faith, the seed, which is Christ.
Noah Webster's New International Dictionary of the English Language
1. (n.) The man who presides over and teaches a school; a male teacher of a school.
2. (n.) One who, or that which, disciplines and directs.

Eclectic Schooling. This means that church/homeschooling families use parts of preplanned curriculum along with supplemental workbooks purchased from local educational vendors. This also means using educational games on the internet, maybe using a virtual school or a co-op for more supplemental classes.

In many places church/homeschooling is a legal option for pastors/parents who wish to provide their members/children with a different learning environment than exists in nearby schools. While academic and religious reasons dominate the motivations for homeschooling, parents cite numerous other reasons ranging from a dissatisfaction with the schools in their area to the desire for better academic test results or worse scenario is the New Age Penetration in injecting Outcome-Based Education (OBE) or in Philippine Version, Experience-Based Curriculum (EBC). It is also an alternative for families living in isolated rural locations and those who choose, for practical or personal reasons, not to have their children attend school.

Isaiah 3:4 - Viewing the 1769 King James Version. Isaiah 3:4 "And I will give children [to be] their princes, and babes shall rule over them." - 1769 Oxford King James Bible 'Authorized Version

Church/Homeschooling may also refer to instruction in the church / home under the supervision of correspondence schools or umbrella schools. In some places, an approved curriculum is legally required if children are to be home-schooled. A curriculum-free philosophy of homeschooling may be called unschooling, a term coined in 1977 by American educator John Holt in his magazine Growing Without Schooling.

WHAT EVERY FILIPINO SHOULD KNOW ABOUT HOMESCHOOLING AND UNSCHOOLING, THEY HAVE NOW BECOME A TREND OF TODAY.... Empty WHAT IS UNSCHOOLING PROGRAM?

Post  Admin Sat May 02, 2009 2:57 am

The term "unschooling" refers to a range of educational philosophies and practices that differ markedly from conventional schooling; while often considered to be a subset of church/homeschooling, unschoolers may be philosophically as estranged from most church/homeschoolers as they are from the advocates of conventional schooling. The term unschooling was almost certainly coined by John Holt in the 1970s, who is also widely regarded as the "father" of unschooling. Sorry to say, we don't fully accept his philosophy, our idea of unschooling is not sending our studetns to a traditional schooling but we devise our own curriculum at church/home by using various computer interactive technology materials and God's Word foremost! While there is significant variation in what is meant by "unschooling", generally speaking, unschoolers believe that the use of standard curricula, as well as other features of traditional schooling, are counterproductive to the goal of maximizing the education of each child. For some reasons like congested classrooms, high tuition fee, cases of underpaid teachers who will give only their best efforts in teaching when their salary increases would be granted, new age and humanistic approach in secular studies, changing curriculum like the Outcome Based Education program of the United Nations that penetrated even our high education already, etc., etceteras!

Church/Homeschoolers and unschoolers, instead, typically allow our young people and children to learn at their own pace through their self-devised curriculum, combined with natural life experiences, including game plays, church/household responsibilities, social interaction, and more importantly Biblical studies that build up good character that serve as a good foundation for future actual life struggles, emergencies and hard knocks of life. Exploring computer internet technology, when available, is often led by the themselves, they learn to be independent minded, adventurous but moderated and facilitated by the adults who send their loved ones to a non-traditional edcuation such as this. The student directed study is a key tenet of the unschooling philosophy provided that the interactive curriculum has got controls and limits as to what the Bible says about sin and freedom abuses. The computer technology is like fire, fire is good, it cooks our food, etc. but abuse of our use of fire may burn our own house. In the same token, the world-wide-web is basically excellent in assiting us grow our young people on their own and at their own pace, but parents must place their computers not inside their rooms but open to the entire household. In our distance learning, the study of Bible Doctrines, Christian Ethics, exposes on the hazards of sin, etc. are incorporated in our curriculum so the e-students become aware of thier limits as to the use of the internet!

While church/homeschooling has been subject to a widespread public debate, there has been almost no media attention given to unschooling in particular. Popular critics of unschooling tend to view it as an extreme educational philosophy, and are concerned that unschooled children will lack the social skills, structure, and motivation of their peers, especially in the job market. No, in fact unschooled young people do have their fellowship in their respecteive churches, neighbors, not to mention the healthy family relationships. Within the homeschooling movement itself, unschooling is discussed in many internecine debates about pedagogy and values, especially where it is perceived by its critics as conflicting with Christian education (maybe if the parents unschooling their kiddies are not Biblical Crhistians).

Let me discuss what pedagogy is?
Pedagogy or paedagogy (pronounced - pida-gadji) is the art or science of being a teacher. The term generally refers to strategies of instruction, or a style of instruction. I proved it myself that distance learning is better because we get to contact our teachers yes not on a day-to-day basis but on a regular times when we need to talk to them via webcam, email, mobile or telephone calls. The respect is there, we don't see any ways that they do that annoy us, the respect is esteablished. As the old quote says, "Familiarity breeds contempt." We don't see any idiosyncracies and personal defects that the traditional classes get to experience daily for several months of study under them. The student directed study is better than having teachers intervene with matching irritations, verbal harassments ( I am not saying all of them are like that, but based on my experiences in the past, many teachers were like that, they abuse their figure-authority, and somehow these attitudes affect our learning process and assimilation of the subject), what more, favoritisms, etc.. OUR STUDENTS IN CHURCH/HOMESCHOOLING & DISTANCE LEARNING ARE TRAINED TO BECOME FUTURE OFFICE WORKERS WHO ARE LEFT IN THEIR TABLE TO DO THEIR TASKS AND JOB REQUIREMENTS. This time, they manage to explore more wisdom based on what the modules require them to learn more.

Pedagogy is also sometimes referred to as the correct use of teaching strategies. For example, Paulo Freire a known educator in academics, referred to his method of teaching adults as "critical pedagogy". In correlation with those teaching strategies the instructor's own philosophical beliefs of teaching are harbored and governed by the pupil's background knowledge and experiences, personal situations, and environment, as well as learning goals set by the student and teacher. It doesn't mean that this does not exist in modular approach of distance learning. This is one reason we assign video clips so they get to experience Freire's critical pedagogy!

Let me quote from the official forum of the site i mentioned:

That's all well and good, but what about families who can't afford a US program? I've inquired with Kolbe, Seton, Calvert, etc and the prices are still quite high for some families. Add the cost of shipping the books and you have quite a sum.

Does being connected with a homeschooling program have to be a necessity? I know that most families in the US unschool or homeschool using their own self-designed curriculum. I've heard of several homeschoolers who, having NOT enrolled in a homeschool program/home study provided, did very well in their college entrances. Why can't Filipinos have that option here? Why can't Filipino families wishing to homeschool have the opportunity to learn how to homeschool autonomously?

Hi fil_girl78. To answer your question, YES it is possible for Filipino families to church/homeschool without having to subscribe to an established curriculum. The DepEd recognizes non-formal & informal learning through their ALS (Alternative Learning System). There really is no problem other than the fact that a lot of gov't officials and employess don't recognize or understand homeschooling. All children who are independently church/homeschooled (without accredited curriculum) are labeled as Out-of-school Youth. Except for a "why-on-earth-didn't-you-put-your-child-to-school-like-the-rest-of-us" stare they'll give you, they'll be able to help your child get his rightful accreditation.

A parent in the gov't blog stated... [i]"I had the same questions until less than a week ago when I found out that "Unschooling" was a viable alternative to structured & often costly homeschooling. I had just spent around P8,000 for the first quarter tuition (not including books & materials) of my son in a DepEd-accredited Homeschool Program which, by all accounts, is a good program. However, the associated expenses, plus my husband's insistence that there must be a better way for our child to learn, led us to unschooling. In a nutshell, unschooling is a radical form of homeschooling in that you abandon curricula & "formal training" in exchange for a more natural and relaxed method of learning. The philosophy will take more than a few sentences to explain here; suffice it to say that yes, Filipinos DO have an option to homeschool autonomously and with minimal expense. Plus they don't have to worry about future accreditation with the DepEd since there are concrete ways for families to shift between homeschooling & traditional schools (i.e. Grades 1-6: Phil. Validation Test; High School: PEPT; and A&E Equivalency Test that UP accepts in lieu of a high school traditional schooling). I would venture to say that after examining a plethora of homeschool methods & techniques (my college thesis was about homeschooling) I find that unschooling to be the best educational option for my child. You would do well to research on unschooling, John Holt etc. Feel free to email me (chame at gmx dot net) if you'd like to talk more about this. I'd be happy to do what I can to help you.

calm_me, this was a very helpful post! i've read Bo Sanchez's article on Catholic Filipino Homeschooling and if I am not mistaken, it promotes the unschooling program, and costs only Php14,700 per year!

Anyway, I just wanted to ask how long you've been unschooling your child? What age do I start? And how is his transcript compiled? Or is there another way that the legal paperwork is done?

unschooling does not have to cost anything. any homeschooling approach, unschooling or not, does not have to cost anything. however, that does not mean you don't buy anything. buy the best quality materials that you can afford.

we are eclectic homeschoolers here in the US, using a combination of Catholic-Charlotte Mason-unschooling-classical philosophies.

there are a lot of online resources to be found, even free books! depends on what your goals are, etc.

our homeschooling blog is at http://eclectichomeschooler.stefoodie.net -- i'll be happy to answer any questions.

Hindi_ako_Pinoy,

It's not clear from your post. Did your niece take the test successfully or was she still refused? Sorry if it's not clear to me.

My parents also homeschooled me autonomously. I did very well because even when my father stopped teaching me, I continued through self-study. But now I want accreditation so I can go to college next year. I just don't know if I should take A&E or PEPT.

calm_her, I sent you an email! Thanks!

And you know, I often hear that homeschooled youths do better in a lot of ways than those who went to formal school (no offense!).

ngayon 4th year na pamangkin ko and she's in top 5...
